Mom, I was thinking...

The other night, on a mini trip, I put Mackenna down to sleep in a hotel room. She was silent for a few minutes and then said, "Mom, I was thinking..." (this statement should strike fear in my heart now) "How is this new baby going to come out of your belly? Will it come out through your belly button?"

So I answered, "Well, some babies come out that way." (honest answer, some do!)

She was quiet again for a few minutes. I patted myself on the back thinking I had sidestepped a conversation I really didn't want to have while still being honest. Yay, score one for mom.

Then she says,"Well, you said SOME babies come out through your belly, how do the rest of the babies come out?"

Sigh...Now according to her pediatrician, she is a smart, curious girl and I am to answer her questions honestly, but not give her any more information that she has requested.

So, I told her. She said. "REALLY?!?!" and was silent for a few more minutes. Then she said quite sadly, "Oh no, our baby's going to land in the toliet." So I had to go into a touch more detail.

See my November 2007 post- I counted my chickens a smidge too early. Now I am just waiting for the "How did the baby get in there?" question which I now think is inevitable. Advice is welcome. :)

(On a very happy note, once we had our little talk, she feel asleep and stayed asleep until 9 the next morning- in a hotel room! I may have to answer some tough questions during the day, but I do get a good nights sleep each night!)
